Kathmandu is the capital and largest city in Nepal

standing along the Bagmati River

at an elevation of approximately 4,265 ft (1,300 m)

in the Kathmandu Valley in central Nepal.

It is the largest of three old Royal Cities

- the other two are the nearby Patan and Bhaktapur.

The Kathmandu Valley is an urban and suburban area

with about 1.5 million inhabitants.
