Allan Glen was a wright who became a wealthy property owner
who left £20,000 in his will in 1850
to make "provision for giving gratuitously
a good practical education to about fifty boys,

 sons of tradesmen or persons
in the industrial classes in Glasgow".

In 1912 the school became a Science High School
 under the Glasgow School Board.
Children who passed the entrance exam,
benefitted from the high standard of teaching at the school.

It ceased to be a selective school in 1973

 and closed in 1989.
