City Chambers from Ingram Street in Glasgow City Centre |
Ingram Street was named after Archibald Ingram (1699-1770), a tobacco lord who became Glasgow's Lord Provost in 1762. Archibald Ingram was an exception amongst the city merchants rising to prominence from obscure origins in Ayrshire. He started out as a street vendor then married Janet Simpson, an armourer's daughter, to become a Glasgow burgess through her right. |
